Oxford Russian Dictionary App Reviews

20 add

The worst version ever!!!!

No more declension tables per word and no more Russian sound module by native speakers!!! A complete disaster!!!!

Good, but not available for split view

Adequate for daily use. But strongly I hope this app of dictionary responds to split-view of iOs as early as possible!

Very good

Still needs some work

This app is ok, but needs some more work to become great. It is not worth the $20 I paid for it yet. Many words that exist in Russian arent accessible from a search in English (for example the word toothbrush). Also, there is a little resource for verb conjugations, but I would like to see a regular verb table. Also, there is no audio pronunciations on this app.

Okay but has some issues.

So, this app has probably the best dictionary for Russian in the store, but the app itself needs some work. The advanced search features dont work (for example, Id like to be able to search for words containing roots, which is handy because Russian has lots of prefixes). And Id really appreciate flashcards (the old Oxford app had them before this developer took over.) Not bad overall but could use more to make it worth $20.

Clean and Thorough but Missing Features

The design and layout are pleasing to the eye. This app is meant for a level beyond the short-stay tourist. I majored in Russian and need a good quality app. So far I have needed the words “upheaval” and “turnover.” I need a really advanced dictionary. Please keep adding words even if it makes the app larger. As some other reviews have pointed out, the app lacks a flashcard feature–something Oxford has had on previous versions. Why is it gone? Also, it’s not very intuitive or easy to use. For example, there is no explanation for what the different search options are, just obscure icons to try to tap. First time users would not understand it, in my opinion. Please keep updating.

Yes, much worse...

Yes, new version is much worse-- why take away declension of verbs, the audio? No excuse for that. $20?, you should do better for that kind of money. Please make the necessary upgrades.

I want a refund!

First why doesnt the old version work? Second what the heck happened with this new version, it s%*#s! NO AUDIO please do not waste your money!

Why do I have to pay for it again!!!

I bought this dictionary two or three years ago, and it was fine.. Now the old dictionary no longer works - I can open the app but there are no words. So Oxford just took back the product I purchased from them? What right do they have to do that? If its a developer issue, then they owe me a free upgrade to the new version. But it seems like this is the about only game in town if you want a brand-name English/Russian/English dictionary, so I will purchase the new edition. But I will never buy another Oxford product again if I have a choice, and I will encourage my friends to avoid Oxford products as well. It appears to me the company has no integrity whatsoever.

Please update to the 2010 version of this app

Ownership, management, and everything else may have changed about this app over the last five years, but if youre going to use the same name as a previous, fantastic dictionary, please at least try to emulate it or at the very least explain why its so appallingly different. I find it unbelievable that in addition to all the other features that have been taken away, like the declension, conjugation, and participle tables for each word, the flash cards, the sound modules, etc. I cant even link to other words by tapping (almost always not found), and I have to specify the dictionary before searching, where previously it was understood that if I typed a Russian word it meant I was automatically using the Russian dictionary. What happened here? There has to be a reasonable explanation for this kind of digression. Is there a "premium" version thats hiding somewhere? Because this certainly isnt the same product I purchased four-five years ago. Bring me 2010, please. Or the people who made that other app I came to love.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!

My old version just stopped working so I downloaded/bought the new one AND it is awful!! I wish I could get my money back!! The old one had pronunciation, flashcards and conjugation tables. The new version has none of that! Shame on you for screwing up what used to be the most awesome dictionary app .

So many great reasons to hate this app

Oxford has broken all the rules with their English-Russian dictionary. First, you dont charge old customers more money for reduced functionality. Second, you dont set up a new app that strips away all of the user preference data so that language learners lose their capacity to track progress. And third, you dont advertise features that dont exist. There were some bugs in the old app. It loaded slowly and its orientation was somehow restricted whenever switching between apps. But its basic functionality was much more adequate than the current version. Oxford ought to refund all its app sales from this app, sell it for $5 or less, and then increase the price when a meaningful feature set has been implemented.

Awful!

I have a hard time wrapping my head around how badly this app has been screwed up. I liked version 2.45 with its audio pronunciation, declension and conjugation tables, multiple definitions, and example idiomatic phrases. Thats all gone now. This version borders on useless.

Sub-standard...

Issues: no case charts, poor verb conjugation, no audio, no flash-card option. Not sure why Oxford agreed to put their name on this sub-standard app. The older Paragon version was far superior. Unfortunately, it seems that Oxford severed ties with Paragon; thus its not available for the newer OS.

Why?

Why would you get rid of the declension tables? Youve made this product so much worse. Please restore this dictionary to its former glory.

Major issues with the new GUI

The new GUI thats been introduced as of the latest update is pretty problematic and clunky. When typing in a desired term, if an exact match is found, it will be listed alone as an exact match with another list of suggestions. The labels "match" and "suggestions" take up a lot of screen space, and an option to not have a separate suggestions list would be appreciated so that any terms that start with the entered search term will be listed alphabetically. Speaking of screen real estate, the latest update has introduced large buttons at the bottom of the main screen with advertisements for other apps made by the developer. For such an expensive app, this is nothing short of an insult to the customers. There is no reason to not move the advertisements off of the main screen. It needs to be done so more of the space is available for the returned matches for search queries. Another flaw is that when one is scrolling through the definitions in a terms page, the search bar will disappear and trying to get it to reappear is more trouble than it should be. The search bar should remain visible at all times, and it should be reduced in size slightly, to give more room for the definitions. One feature that is missing, that I would suggest to the dev team behind the app is to introduce bidirectional search queries so that one does not need to specify which language is being searched for the entered term. It would add ease of use and reduce clutter.

Deficiencies in current version

The Oxford Russian Dictionary follows nouns and verbs with one or more inflected endings, with the stressd syllable indicated, so that users can see how each verb conjugates, as well as whether the stress is on the stem or the ending of verbs and nouns. This information has been omitted from the current version of the app. Users will need to buy the paper dictionary in order want to learn how to use these words. Mobile Systems needs to correct this deficiency asap because the existing app is unacceptable as a learning tool for serious students of the Russian language.

Total garbage. The free apps are better.

Given all the shortcomings and issues that were present in the previous version as it stood, you decided to put them on the back burner and concentrate on an ugly UI update! Super smart. How about you work on bringing back the declension tables, audio pronunciation, and verb conjugations that used to make this app worth any money. This is so overpriced it’s sickening. This is especially true considering how great it used to be just a few years ago until you all destroyed it. Thanks for nothing.

Shame on Oxford

How despicably, shamelessly awful this once-great app has become is easily demonstrated by the fact that Ive been compelled to keep one of my iOS devices forever in iOS 7.1 just so it can run the proper earlier version of the dictionary done by Paragon software. This version is an utter embarrassment: extremely slow, glitchy, and with only a small fraction of the features that were once available. Until this is resolved, I will be boycotting all OUP books and products.

Lack of content and terrible price

This version is missing all the word usage examples, all the audio pronunciations, and even the simplistic flash card feature from the prior version. I upgraded hoping for improvements, and wound up with over 90% of the old content missing. At this price, its an outrageous ripoff.
